Study Support Centre

The Extra Time @ SUFC Study Support Centre opened at the start of 2005 and operates within the heart of Roots Hall. As part of the “Playing for Success” initiative launched by the department for Education and Skills (DfES) in 1997, the scheme aims to use the power and motivation of professional sport to raise attainmengt in literacy, numeracy and ICT as well as improve self-esteem, confidence and motivation of pupils.

Extra Time @ SUFC is a partnership between the DfES, Southend Borough Council, Southend United Football Club and the Football Foundation. Here at Southend United we have a purpose built, state of the art classroom. As well as a wireless computer network, we have a range of multimedia equipment and an interactive student response system. A wireless network allows access to the classroom from anywhere within Roots Hall using laptops.

Children and young people from a wide range of abilities and backgrounds make use of the facilities – from Gifted and Talented to teenagers referred by Youth Offending Teams.

Southend United Community and Educational Trust have developed a very close working relationship with the Extra Time @ SUFC Study Support centre staff.
